TNN Feb 02, , The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved the promulgation of an ordinance making it mandatory for private broadcasters to share live feed without advertisements of all important sporting events with public broadcaster Doordarshan.
For Test matches, private broadcasters will have to share live feed for matches played in India and highlights for those played abroad. Additionally, the signals of all international cricket finals would also have to be shared, even if India does not feature in them.
Not surprisingly, this announcement has not gone down well with some private sports channels. The ordinance comes following the recent tiff between Nimbus and Prasar Bharti over the telecast of the just concluded India-West Indies one-day series. Following cot intervention, Nimbus had agreed to share its feed with Doordarshan with a delay of seven minutes.
Cricket apart, Mr Dasmunsi said, the list of sporting events whose feed will have to be shared would be specified after consultations with various sporting bodies.
In tennis, private operators may be mandated to share the feed for finals of all Grand Slam tournaments and matches featuring India. Besides, all Davis Cup semi-finals and finals are likely to figure in the list.
The list may also include all important soccer and hockey events, played both in India and abroad. Mr Dasmunsi said that a technical committee would examine the issue of encrypting the signals being telecast by Doordarshan in order to make this feed inaccessible to broadcasters outside the country.
We have to see how to get equipment and how to go about the process. The existing revenue share of in favour of the private broadcaster will continue for the shared feed, he added.
